Shoun Kiln (Ceramics)

The whiteness, clearness, and colorfulness of Aritayaki will never fade away. Our products are not made under a blessed environment, but our craftsman put their heart into each and every product. We have been trying our best to preserve the traditional techniques. All of our vessels and vases are designed and hand drawn with our enthusiasm and passion.

“Shaping our imagination.” This is very obvious but it is the most difficult part of my work. “What is my imagination? “ This is a theme that many craftsmen have been facing from the ancient times. The discrepancy between dullness in preserving the good old tradition and anxiousness in innovation never ends. The only ones who can appreciate the contradiction could leave his name as an artist. One of those artists is Fujii Shoun, age 77.

Fujii Shoun was born in Arita, the birthplace of porcelain. He was a businessman who later became a craftsman in his thirties. This could also be said in other industries, but the work of an artist who has experienced a different occupation is quite unique. “I can't stop myself from adding something to my paintings. If I paint a flower, I would add a bird. Next to the bird, I would add a twig. I end up filling almost all of the blank spaces” Fujii explains. It seems like his artwork is quite close to addition culture of the west, not the subtraction culture of Japan.

Fujii's artworks are highly acclaimed throughout the world, and these days, he frequently receives orders from the Middle East. His work has caught attention of a king in the Middle East. Since then, his works have been cherished by the king. Fujii plans to hold an exhibition in the UAE and Turkey this year.
